How I paint my nails

I get a lot of questions about how I paint my nails so it is time to answer them :) First of all I want to say that this is my way and it may not be right, but it works on me. I paint my nails over ten years now and the way I do it is years of mistakes and practise. If you think I am doing this wrong, you may be right but as I said: works for me :) So here we go:

  • After removing my old polish I wash my hands with soap to get rid of the nail polish remover and don´t apply any cream or lotion.
  • Then I apply base coat. My favourite is Essie Protein Base Coat, about which I already wrote. It dries really quick, so I can start painting my nails immediately.
  • Painting the nails...I tried to do a video, which would be easier to understand, but it was crap, so I will try to explain on a picture:
  1. I always sweep one side of the brush against the bottle to get rid of too much polish. If you have too much polish on your brush you can never paint neatly. On the other side if you pick too little, the result will be crap too. The perfect amount of polish is about expirience, everybody needs it different. When I place the brush on the nail I put about half of the amount on the top of my nail (number 1 on the picture). By doing this I don´t get all the polish on the bottom and nothing on the top. I had problems with that when I started painting.
  2. Then I start paintng my nails like everybody else does BUT I do it a bit different. I don´t place the brush the closest to the cuticle as I can get. From my experience it is really hard to do that neatly. Instead I place it about 2-3mm away (look at number 2 on the picture). When the brush lies on the nail you have better control of it. So now I just slide the brush close to the cuticles. It is really easy.
  3. After doing this I do about three strokes on the whole nail and I am finished :)
  • I know it might sound a bit complicated or confusing, but 99% of the times I don´t have to do any clean ups on my cuticles and I have a nice and neat curve like on the picture without any other cleaning.
If you have any questions about this, please go ahead and ask me :) I will be happy to help!
P.S. Moc se omlouvám svým českým čtenářkám, ale do češtiny už to nepřeložím :) Ach ta lenost. Kdyžtak se ptejte.

  1. Thanks for this post, it was very interesting ! I paint my nails the same way, so it reassures me :) The only thing I do different is about "number one", I never thought of that but I'll try because I don't like having too much polish on the bottom of my nails.
And I do some cleanup on the cuticles because I don't have your experience ;)

  2. very helpful post! I think that what you said about your years of practice is what make you so good at painting your nails. I've found that the more I paint, the better I get and the easier it is.

  5. Katie: thank you hun, hope it was understandable :)

Ayuu: wow, that is great! About the number one...try it and you will see if it works for you. I Just put a drop of polish and then continue, it doesn´t taky any time.

Cara: you are right! Practise is most important, like with everything :)

lovemy3girls: let me know if it works for you :) Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

JacieO: perfect! I thought I am doing it wrong and now I see many of us paint our nails the same.

An: to jsem ráda, ale kdyby nebylo něco jasné, klidně napiš :)

    nihrida: thank you!

  11. You explained really well, no video needed! I do exactly the same except that I place the brush at number 2 right away, but that's because I have short nails and can reach the tip easily with one stroke. thank you very much for your mini-tutorial!

  12. thanks for the tips ;-) My step 2 is actually the same, but I still don't get that perfect round shape, guess I need some practice.

  14. An: pak dej vědět, jak to dopadlo :)

rijaH: non prob, I just hope I managed to explaing it.

Blusherine: thank you for your words :) You are right that step one is not needed if one as short nails.

Blu11: it is practise, don´t worry. I am sure you will have it perfect soon :)

Ayuu: wow! Great to hear that I actually helped someone. Thanks for writing me :)

  16. I'm a bit lost re: step #2 and #3, are you saying that once you place the brush 2-3mm from the cuticle, you push it up then go down?

Too bad you an t do a Youtube video, I'd love to this this technique?

  17. I've seen a nail technician do this trick. It's really neat. This is how am doing my nails too!

But I'm probably not as good as you. :)
    More practice for me!

  18. That's so nice. It's funny how you girls do it so differently from us here in Brazil. In Brazil we paint the whole nail not really bothering to stay away from the skin or cuticles (actually cuticles is a whole other subject coz it's a habit to remove our cuticles with nippers and things like that... I know it's not healthy and I'm trying to stop hehe, but I think it's just a cultural thing). Then, we just clean the polish that got on the skin with an orange stick and a little bit of cotton soaked in polish remover. It's way more time consuming, I like your way better lol.
    =)

  19. Michelle: wow, never thought that the way you paint your nails can be so much different from country to country :) Oh and I used to remove my cuticles with nippers but I don´t now. Thanks for letting me know about how you do it in Brazil :)
